It’s important to remove blood stains from a mattress as soon as possible, whether it came from a cut, a period, or a pet. Fresh blood stains are much easier to get out of a mattress than ones that have been there for a while.
Most blood stains on a mattress can be cleaned with things you probably already have. It’s not quite as easy as throwing blood-stained clothes in the washing machine, but it can be done.
Instructions
There are many things that can be used to remove blood stains from a mattress. The best one is the one you have with you when you find blood. As soon as possible, clean up the blood stain. If the first product doesn’t get the blood out, repeat the steps or switch to a different product and keep cleaning until the stain is gone.
Always treat blood stains with cold water. Hot water can cause the proteins in the blood to clump together and stick to the fibers even more.
1. Remove the Bedding
Take everything off the bed, including the comforter, sheets, and mattress pad. Treat the blood stains on any linens right away and wash them in cold water with a heavy-duty enzyme-based detergent.
2. Blot Fresh Blood Stains
If the blood is still wet, put on rubber gloves and use paper towels to soak up as much moisture as possible. Don’t rub the stain, just blot with firm pressure. Rubbing or wiping can make the stain spread.
3. Try Cold Water
Most of the time, you can get rid of small, fresh blood stains by blotting the area with a cloth that has been wet with cold water. Dip the cloth in cold water and squeeze it until it doesn’t drip anymore. Blot the stain, moving the blood to a clean part of the cloth as you go.
If the blood stain is gone, use a clean, dry cloth to soak up the water. Let the mattress dry in the air for at least eight hours before putting anything on it.
4. Combine Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide
In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide to make a cleaning paste. Apply the paste to the stain with a small soft-bristled brush or an old toothbrush. Don’t forget to start at outside and work your way in.
As the hydrogen peroxide reacts with the blood, the mixture will start to bubble. Give it at least 30 minutes or until the bubbling stops working. Dip a clean cloth into cold water and wring it out until it is no longer dripping. Wipe away the cleaning paste and the blood, moving as you go to a clean part of the cloth.
Let the mattress dry for at least eight hours before you use it. Use a vacuum with attachments for furniture to get rid of any baking soda that is still there.
5. Use an Enzyme-Based Stain Remover
Use a laundry stain remover with enzymes to get rid of dried blood stains on a mattress. The enzymes break up the molecules of the stain. Put a small amount of the stain remover on a damp microfiber cloth.
Work the product into the blood stain, starting at the outside edges and moving in toward the middle (this keeps the stain from spreading). Let it work for at least 15 minutes. Use cold water to wet clean microfiber cloth and blot the stain remover and the stain away. As the stain spreads, keep moving to a clean part of the cloth or rinse it often.
Let the mattress air dry for eight hours. You can use a fan to help speed up the drying process.
6. Treat With Oxygen Bleach
In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup of dry oxygen bleach and 1/2 cup of water to make a paste. Using a soft-bristled nylon brush, apply the paste to the blood stain from the edges in toward the middle.
Give the paste at least two hours to work, but the longer the better. Oxygen bleach is a mild bleach that works slowly. Dip a clean cloth into cold water and wring it out until it is no longer dripping. Wipe away the blood and oxygen bleach. As you work, move to a clean part of the cloth or rinse it often.
Let the mattress dry for at least eight hours before you use it.
WARNING
As a weak bleach, hydrogen peroxide may discolor a mattress with a dark fabric cover. It will not harm the mattress’s cushioning or internal structure.
