1. Elon Musk: $221.5 Billion

Elon Musk

Elon Musk is the CEO of Tesla, a company that makes electric cars. He is a bit strange. His total pay package for 2020 was worth more than $6.6 billion.

Musk has been the highest paid CEO in the US for three years in a row, even though Tesla doesn’t pay him a salary. Instead, he gets paid when the company reaches certain growth and market capitalization milestones. Musk can use these options to buy Tesla stock, which was worth nearly $1,200 per share at the beginning of January 2022, for a crazy low price of $70 per share.

Musk, who is said to be worth $260 billion, has gotten the best of both worlds with this performance-based deal.

2. Mike Pykosz: $568 Million

Pykosz is the CEO of Oak Street Health, which runs clinics for Medicare patients that provide primary care. As part of his pay for the year before and the company’s change from a partnership to a C corp, Oak Street Health gave Pykosz stock and option awards in 2020. His total income for the year went up because he did that.

There were also a lot of stock and option grants, which added up to more than $500 million. Pykosz, on the other hand, made an impressive salary of almost $580,000, plus more than $390,000 in bonuses.

3. Trevor Bezdek: $497 Million

Bezdek is the CEO of the company GoodRx, which helps people find cheaper prescription drugs. His co-CEO is the fourth highest paid CEO on our list, making just a few thousand dollars less than Bezdek in 2020.

Bezdek’s salary and bonuses added up to about $980,000 in 2020. He also got nearly $500 million worth of stock awards.

4. Douglas Hirsch: $497 Million

In 2020, Hirsch got the same salary, bonus, and stock awards as Bezdek as co-CEO of GoodRx. Perks make up the small difference between the two CEOs’ total pay packages. Bezdek got about $9,500 worth of perks, while Hirsch got less than $7,000.

5. Eric Wu: $388 Million

Wu is the CEO of Opendoor Technologies, a real estate company. The Opendoor app is how the company, which will go public in December 2020, buys and sells homes. As a result of the initial public offering, Wu’s pay went up by 134,000% from the year before (IPO).

As you might expect, most of Wu’s $388 million salaries came from stock awards. In fact, he did make $189,000 a year. But in terms of CEO pay, that amount of cash is not very much. Wu’s salary is the lowest on our list, besides Musk’s, by about $300,000.

6. Robert Antokol: $281 Million

Robert Antokol is the CEO and co-founder of Playtika. Playtika is an Israel-based digital entertainment company that makes and sells mobile casino games. Rentokil is one of the CEOs who make the most money in the world. Reports say that the company paid him $372 million for his work there.

7. Alex Karp: $369 Million

Karp is the CEO of Palantir Technologies, which makes software for analyzing large amounts of data. Palantir, like Opendoor, went public in 2020. Shortly before its IPO, the company gave Karp 141 million options that will become valid every three months.

Because of that pre-IPO grant, Karp got more than $250 million in stock and options. He also got a salary of $1.1 million and benefits worth $3.1 million.

8. Geoffrey Price: $356.2 Million

Since 2012, Geoffrey Price has been the CEO and a member of the board of Oak Street Health. Before helping to start this company, he worked as a consultant and project manager for Boston Consulting Group from 2010 to 2012. (2012- 2013). He was born in the United States.

He makes more than $356.2 million a year at Oak Street Health. Geoffrey Price is 40 years old. He has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

10. Tim Cook: $265 Million

Cook took over as CEO of Apple after Steve Jobs died in 2011. He has been on lists of the highest paid CEOs for a number of years.

In 2020, Cook’s total annual pay is likely to be around $265 million. Most people would be interested in Cook’s $3 million salary as CEO, but it doesn’t compare to his $10.7 million bonus and $250 million in stock awards.

Why is Elon Musk top Highest Paid CEO in 2022?

In 2020, Elon Musk’s name won’t be on any list of the highest paid CEOs. Still, Forbes says he is the CEO who makes the most money.

Forbes says that Musk was paid about $11 billion in 2020. He got all of this money in the form of Tesla stock options, which he got as part of the crazy compensation plan he signed with the electric car company in 2018. That plan, which cost $2.3 billion at first, was spread out over ten years. But it did not become law until 2020. Elon Musk is still the CEO with the most money in 2022.

In the 2018 plan, the option grants were based on Tesla meeting certain milestones for market capitalization, sales, or Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization). Overall, Musk’s compensation package gives him the right to buy a total of 101,2 million Tesla shares at a split-adjusted price of $70 per share, thanks to options. (A share of Tesla stock is currently worth more than $670.) The compensation package is split into 12 levels, and each level can only be unlocked when Tesla reaches a certain goal.

Musk’s first four sets of options became fully vested in 2020, when Tesla reached a number of market capitalization and operational milestones and its stock price went up sevenfold, making Musk’s wealth go through the roof. The person with the most money in the world is the CEO of Tesla. Elon Musk’s net worth rose from $24.6 billion in mid-March 2020 to $165.7 billion on May 5, 2021. But by 2022, Elon Musk’s wealth had grown to $271,3 billion.

Each of the 12 sets of options becomes valid when the company meets both goals for increasing market capitalization and operational milestones related to growing annualized revenue or adjusted Ebitda. The market capitalization milestones are based on a trailing monthly average, starting at $100 billion and going up by $50 billion after that. But Tesla blew those out of the water, reaching a market capitalization of more than $650 billion by the end of 2020. Also, a financial metric, such as revenue or adjusted EBITDA growth, must be met every quarter. By the end of 2020, Tesla had reached four of these goals. It had reached an annualized revenue of $20 billion and raised its adjusted Ebitda from less than $1.5 billion to $4.5 billion.

Musk has the right to buy 8.4 million Tesla shares with each set of options. Forbes says that the CEO of Tesla got a total of $13.3 billion from his options last year. Forbes used the price of Tesla’s stock at the time each set of options became valid and was approved by the Tesla board to figure out how much each award was worth. Musk will have to pay about $2.36 billion to use the options. After those costs are taken into account, Forbes estimates that the options added $11 billion to Musk’s wealth.
