As planned, Apple is working to make sure that the chips used in all of its devices, like the iPhone, iPad, and even Macs, are made in the United States. This is another step toward making the devices it makes in the country where they are used. Mark Gurman, an Apple expert, said that Tim Cook confirmed all of this during a meeting with employees in Germany. He also said that Apple has already decided to buy a chip production plant in Arizona, which would make the company much less reliant on countries like Taiwan.
Cook says that 60% of processors are made in Taiwan, and “no matter how you feel or what you think, that percentage coming from anywhere is not a strategic position.” So Apple’s current goal is to stop being so dependent on East Asian countries and move production to the U.S. This is in line with a vision the company has had for the past few years. For example, the company moved iPhone production from China to India as a kind of transition to stop being so dependent on East Asian countries.
According to the report, Cook thinks that the new plant in Arizona, which will be owned by TSMC, Apple’s only chip supplier, will open in 2024 and be able to make 20,000 chips per month and 5-inch processors. This is because TSMC has developed a new process that will be used to make the A17 processors that will be in some iPhone 15 models.
And that would be the first plant that makes chips for Apple. Other news sources say that TSMC is considering building a second plant near the first one in Arizona, but no decisions have been made yet. On the other hand, TSMC is following a good plan by working with its partners and setting up local factories to avoid paying more to export and be less dependent on the outside world. Cook pointed out that they could also get chips from plants in Europe.
With these kinds of ideas, technology development could move from being global to being local or just between a few business allies.
